Development Discussion June 9 2010

General ideas

  • could do both a digital and card game
  • start with a small project first and see how it goes
  • most people are comfortable with Java and would like to use it over other languages
  • create a game that involves both digital and physical interfaces. For example (albeit a bad one) asteroids with a ship building card game
  • equal interest in both design and programming

M.A.S.S. (Multiplayer asteroids)

  • This idea has been floating around for some time now.
  • those attending technical discussions are probably more interested in this idea because it involves programming
  • mechanic ideas
    • Friendly fire provided feedback but does no damage
    • black hole gun
  • in-game level and game editor
  • programming language should be platform independent

Trading Card Game

  • If implemented on the computer it would be easier to program because it is turned based (debatable)
  • it should be expansion focused
  • multiple unique play styles similar to the colour breakdown for Magic
  • might not be as interesting to programmers

Blender game web

  • create small games using the Blender Game Engine (free)
  • connect all the small games together in a hub world
  • perhaps it is easier to do with flash since people don't have to download blender to play them

Themes for next week

It was decided that for the next design discussion we will attempt to generate ideas for a card game. We had some time so we brainstormed some themes to think about over the weekend. Try to bring ideas with some detailed mechanics to the discussion.

  • cyrodream (a continuation of a board/card game made in a GDC competition)
  • space
  • detective
  • racing
  • steampunk
  • fantasy druidic
  • science fantasy
  • budget movies
  • psychological
  • food
  • physical card mechanics ie. Slap Jack
