9.06 - Gun.Smoke sequel
Idea for July 12, 2010
Summary
We took the game Gunsmoke for the Nintendo Entertainment system and developed a sequel for it.
Theme: Spiritual successor to Gunsmoke (NES)
includes topics that expand on the theme
The original game had:
- a western theme
- limited angle shooting and you can't shoot straight
- a store for the player to buy weapon upgrades
- defeating special enemies and then you can get rewards from their wanted posters
- continuous scrolling
- wraps around until you accumulate enough money to defeat bosses
Genre:
game genre with possible significant changes or important points
Mechanics/Systems
individual gameplay mechanics and mechanics categorized by system
- 10 carefully designed levels which introduce new game mechanics gradually
- level 1: really similar to the first game to introduce the basic mechanics
- beginning: cutscene showing bandits robbing a bank and you start to chase after them
- ending: bandits mount horses and ride to the next level
- level 2: horse riding riding stage
- dodging mechanics
- beginning: starts out on horse
- ending:
- level 3: a bandit camp
- bandits pop out of tents
- shooting down tents could have traps
- ending: you defeat the boss and capture him
- level 4: civilian town
- introduces civilians that you want to avoid shooting
- beginning: on the way back to the down jail
- level 5: introduce new mechanic
- introduces whip that can pull objects to you such as civilians
- this lets players know it can affect enemies

- level 6: next town with damsel in distress (sheriff's daughter that helps you with information)
- beginning: the sheriff says that his daughter is up ahead fighting the bandits
- ending: bandits say "she heard too much, put her on the train tracks" and take her away
- level 7: getting a horse and catching up to the train
- in the background the player can see how far they are relative to the train
- level 8: train
- inside the train enemies take cover using the seats
- level 9: canyon
- level 10: duel on top of a cliff
- combine various mechanics together
- level 1: really similar to the first game to introduce the basic mechanics
Horse riding levels
- changes perspective to horizontal side scrolling
- dodging by moving up and down
- aiming is done by shooting in front of you
- horses have a fatigue meter and you need to switch to horses after defeating the bandits on them
Story
narrative elements concerning plot, characters, world
You play as a Sheriff who starts out by chasing after the bandits and through your journey you take many detours to capture other bandits.

It was a really interesting approach we took by looking at pacing and timing of introducing new game mechanics.
