3.09 - Possession Hero

Idea for March 20, 2008

Theme: Possession Hero

includes topics that expand on the theme

  • Needs more development

Genre: Action/Adventure

game genre with possible significant changes or important points

  • Weird, dark game about death and rebirth in a more open-ended style of gameplay

individual gameplay mechanics and mechanics categorized by system

  • Death of the player character is not, punished, but rather required
  • When the player dies, they possess the body of the killer (soul transfers over)
  • Possession Threshold is high: the player will only die from an attack that is assuredly fatal
  • Combat:
    • No controlled combat?
    • Combat is based around receiving a killing blow, rather than giving it (unless you need to stay alive in your current possessed body)
  • Body Switching:
    • The player has a default body that, when in trouble, they will switch to out of necessity, but it is weak and out of the way (the player loses progress). This can be returned to through suicide
    • The player must acquire specific bodies: bosses that are important people in the game world, with special privileges and abilities
    • You cannot take over innocent bodies (although, they won't be killing you anyways)

narrative elements concerning plot, characters, world

  • The player is a pacifist, trying to lead a peaceful life
  • The antagonist is a serial killer, that you need to have kill you so you may possess him and stop him
  • He knows who you are and what you can do, making him fear you because killing you means he would no longer exist: the player must trick him into killing you
  • Cultists work for the killer, and are able to banish you from your possessed body back to your default one (perhaps only through touch?)

includes possible target user group traits

  • A pretty radical idea, not sure about the audience for it
